Flyfishing

If you are planning to flyfish during your stay at the lodge there are a few things you should know. With advance notice, we will book you with a guide who specializes in flyfishing. This means he will have a boat specially equipped for the fly fisherman, he will know the best shallow water areas for stalking fish, and he will be able to aid in casting techniques, fly selection, etc.

The standard equipment for flyfishing in these coastal waters is as follows: a fast action 8 to 10 weight rod that you have practiced with several times, a saltwater fly reel to compliment the rod with a good cork or metal disc drag as well as a palm break, and a floating saltwater taper line with at least 200 yards of 20 lb backing. Leaders should range from 9 to 12 feet in length with a tippet strength of 8 to 15 lbs and do not require a shock tippet. An assortment of flies should include Clouser minnows, Scates shrimp, seaducers, snapping shrimp, deceivers, bent-backs, popping bugs, and any other saltwater fly made to resemble a shrimp or local baitfish. These flies should come in an assortment of colors and sizes ranging from #2 to #4/0. They should also be equipped with wire or monofilament weed guards.

Flies are not sold at lodge, and are not tied upon request. Your guide will have all of the most recent hot patterns for use on the boat if you do not have one in your fly box.

Wading booties and polarized sunglasses are also essential for fly fishing success. Your local fly shop can usually put together fly boxes as well as the rest of the necessary gear for your trip.
